Shark vertebra Formation: Ozan Formation Age: Cretaceous Dimensions: 4 cm (diameter) x 1 cm (thickness) Self-collected September 2019. A note on shark vertebra and fish vertebra: "The vertebral centra of sharks can be distinguished from the vertebrae of bony fish by a number of characteristics. Shark vertebral centra are generally disk-shaped with both faces concave. The surfaces are fine-grained and similar to porcelain in appearance. The circumferencial surfaces usually exhibit two pairs of holes where the neural and hemal arches are anchored. Fish vertebra, on the other hand, will show spiny processes where the neural and hemal arches and other bony projections were attached." Comments are closed.
